Dickin Medals valued on Antiques Roadshow

RPRA General Manager, Stewart Wardrop and Colin Hill Pigeons in War Volunteer Curator for the RPRA at Bletchley Park, travelled to Stowe House in Buckingham for a recording of the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow. He took along with him for valuation Dickin Medals won by wartime carrier pigeons, and was interviewed by the programme’s militaria expert, Graham Lay.

ANOTHER DICKIN MEDAL SURFACES!

Earlier today a member of the public contacted the RPRA after seeing the Dickins medals on the antiques Roadshow.

The medal won by Cologne owned by Mrs Payne of Nottingham, will appear on a future episode of the antiques Roadshow – probably the autumn 2013.

The story relating to how Cologne won the medal and some more supporting documents are now going to be researched thoroughly and we hope to publish a full story in a few months’ time.

Boom Pictures Cymru- Pembrokeshire Coastal Path Documentary

Boom Pictures, an independent television production company based in Cardiff- Wales are currently producing a documentary series
for BBC Wales about Pembrokeshire Costal Path. The idea of the Documentary, is to meet people who live, work and play on the path. One of the contributors is Owen Duffy, who works for National Parks. Owen is a Pigeon Fancier, and the documentary will follow Owen as he prepares and selects his Pigeons to race in the Cwmbran ‘young bird’ race as well as returning back to Mr Duffys home the following day to see how the pigeons got on.

The series will broadcast later in the year.

Young birds are going well , the younger birds now have caught up with the older young birds. They are going out daily all together and in 2 weeks we will be crate training them ready for the start of training !! Will get a video on next week with them flying.

We had a few more work back from the last Hot Spot and a couple more from previous Hot Spots , picking one up from Telford tomorrow as well , will put a full loft list online tomorrow night. Its looking a good week weather wise so they will be out exercise morning and evening ready for there 200 mile race next weekend.

Rpra school competition – Eldersfield school, corse lawn.

General Manager- Stewart Wardrop, visited a local school to talk to children about all things pigeon.
The talk followed from the Primary School being entered into our free One Loft Race schools competition this year.

The talk included interesting Pigeon history and facts about pigeons in war.

The children got to hold a racing pigeon with the highlight of the visit been then release of the pigeons from the playground!

Hot Spot 3 Update

Evening..

Well done to the winners. 9 birds came together around the time i thought with K Bryan first through the traps. South Wales taking the glory this week. That’s the 3 races going to Wales on the trot. The Yearlings had it tough today with a very light se wind and they had to work with some getting in trouble , its hard for them being on there own. Next Thursday they will be marked to go and be liberated with the South West Lerwick Club and race on the Saturday from 203 miles Hexham.

Marked list online. Will update just after 9 am of any news on a liberation. Looking at the wind i would say around the 3 hours 20. Good Luck All..

We are going to mark tonight for a race tomorrow , hoping for a early liberation between 7am to 9am weather permitting. There will be a marked list on tonight around 8pm.

Evening.

The Yearlings are well and this week they will just be loft flown as we don’t want them to get basket stale with them being old birds. The weather is unpredictable at present sunshine one minute heavy hail stones the next. Ingleton will be there next race this being Thursday or Friday going on the forecast and will be keeping a close eye on this. Ingleton will be the first race that counts in the Ace pigeon award being one of the 3 longest races at 148 miles. Will let you know on Wednesday when we are looking to mark the birds.
