Bird Flu Latest

On 18 January 2018, Defra introduced an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone in England. This means it is a legal requirement for all bird keepers to follow strict biosecurity measures.

It comes as H5N6 bird flu was confirmed in 13 wild birds in Warwickshire, a few days after bird flu – highly expected to be the same strain – was found in wild birds in South Dorset on 12 January 2018.

Defra’s advice to pigeon fanciers is that “you can exercise, train and race pigeons, but you should try to prevent them from making direct contact with wildfowl. Keep a close watch on the health of your birds.”

Please see the full advice and keep up with developments on the Defra website. If you have any queries please direct them to the Defra Helpline on 03000 200 301.
