Members may recall an appeal by sculptor Kate McGwire back in 2014 for white feathers to help with a large piece she was working on, and some of you have been sending her feathers ever since.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Bird Garden at Harewood House in West Yorkshire, Kate has been invited to create a new solo exhibition. With eight sculptures, including one new commission, “Menagerie shines a spotlight on the ‘common’ bird and connects the themes of nature, sustainability and art in a series of beautiful and intricate pieces across the State Floor”. The piece shown below (top) is made up of around 10,000 pigeon feathers. The exhibition runs until 25th October, and you can read more about it on the Harewood House website.
Kate has sent our members a special message: “Thank you so much to all who have donated their time and feathers over the last months and years. I am so appreciative of the Royal Pigeon Racing Association for their support and for connecting me to such a dedicated group of individuals who share my passion for pigeons.”
